Has been Vice-dean on residency training of the Medical Faculty of the University of Tartu 2006-2016
President of the Estonian Society of Internal medicine 2006-2017
President of the Estonian Society of family physicians 1996-2001

The main areas of research have been devoted to the health outcomes in chronic diseases (diabetes, metabolic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis) and factors having an impact on this, diagnosis and clinical significance of hypolactasia, assessment of different diagnostic methods, reforms in primary health care and medical education. Altogether more than 250 publications, out of them 85 in international peer-reviewed journals. Supervised 6 PhD theses.

The main teaching responsibilities are in teaching physical examination and communication skills for undergraduate medical students, general internal medicine for residents, methodology of research and publications for PhD students.

Adviser of the Ministry of Social Affairs in Internal Medicine.

Consultant of the World Bank Health projects in medical education and primary care in several countries of Central Asia, Russia, Moldova, Macedonia.
